Jeffrey Paradise turns 27 this week, and I want to honor him by showcasing this mix by Tiga, which–like Jeffrey Paradise himself–is BEYOND GAY.

What does it mean to go BEYOND GAY? To understand going BEYOND GAY, you have to realize there are two types of “gay.” First, there’s the “I get off on genitals like my own,” biological sort of gay. We’re not talking about that. We’re talking about the second, more common form of “gay.” The “gay” as in “You’re gay” for making your own clothes in the seventh grade, or “That’s gay” for going to the Matthew Barney exhibition instead of the Nickleback concert. Basically, “gay” meaning “so cool that normal idiots feel weird about themselves just considering it.”
Now, shit: Jeffrey Paradise was that kinda “gay” from the get-go. He was wearing feather earrings in sixth grade and knew Serge Gainsbourg was a genius before he’d even learned to shave. He threw a Yves Saint Laurant spring fashion show tea party for all his girlfriends in highschool and ended up with four of them in his bed at the same time. He wrote his Master’s thesis on wearing turqoise and gold AT THE SAME TIME and was playing disco in Miami in two thousand FIVE. Gay from the get-go, y’all.
Then, at some point, that mother went BEYOND GAY. It’s hard to put in words just what that means, so try to imagine driving a 1978 Trans Am Special Edition at almost the speed of light (put on the mix–the link is below–look at this photo for a few seconds, then try to stay with me):
Imagine that as you approach the speed of light in the Trans Am, time and space begin to mix. Matter becomes energy as you drive faster and faster, the sights and sounds around you bending back in a bright arc of transcendental wonder. Still you speed on, faster and faster, your being ceasing to exist as your body and mind convert into white-hot energy that knows no temporal presence. You and the Trans Am, the music your’re hearing and the cosmos around you roaring faster and faster until you all merge together in a fine-line continuum of awesomeness until BOO-YAH!!–you cross the boundary, blast past the speed of light and become whatever’s on the other side.
Some call it Paradise. I call it Jeffrey Paradise.
Now: load up this mix, get your head right and get yourself ready to BLOW UP tonight.
